Struggles in Europe Limit Downside Risk For US Polymer Prices

  • European polymer prices have spiked because local production has fallen more than moderating demand in some end-use sectors, a plus for US polymer exports.
  • The shortages come amid rising US surpluses and falling prices, and whether more opportunities to increase flows to Europe will matter remains to be seen.
  • The US surpluses could still increase if an economic slowdown hits local demand and weakness in other export markets outside Europe, notably in Asia, is severe.
  • Lower freight costs will also complicate the picture as they open up global markets to surpluses in Asia – regardless, Europe should find the polymers it needs.
  • Otherwise, we discuss the various demand signals, global ag market strength and resilience, and the future of hydrogen, housing, and oil industry spending.

Last week we discussed 34 Chemicals and related products and 137 Companies.
