C-MACC Weekly Sustainability and Energy Transition Report
Time to Put Your Foot on The Gas(ification)
- 1st Topic of the Week: Gasification of MSW and biomass need more development dollars as it promises to unlock significant quantities of E-fuels at far lower costs than through carbon capture and green hydrogen. The technology is close, but someone with a large balance sheet needs to take the reins: Air Products?
- 2nd Topic of the Week: Pressure on farming to become more sustainable and, at the same time, drive its carbon footprint lower will likely spur demand for some cleaner farm inputs, but not if the costs of compliance lead to meaningful food inflation.
- Otherwise: We evaluate more recycling challenges – similar to gasification, this business needs bigger balance sheets. We also discuss the need for CCS and what low carbon prices in Europe may do to prevent it, and we provide a few thoughts on data centers and whether nuclear power can come to the rescue to meet demand.
Exhibit 1: Early analysis of gasifier technology did not look at feed homogeneity – the more mixed the feed, the more likely constraints with the upper capacity limits.
