Polymer Global Analysis
Resin To Riches: Weekly Plastic Market Insights
- General Thoughts: Global spot polymer prices were, on average, lower WoW, with US and European prices falling relative to Asia – crude oil price weakness and ample product availability imply more downward pressure ahead.
- Polyethylene (PE): US spot PE prices declined more than Europe WoW, with both falling relative to Asia. Though US producers nominated price hikes for March, we observe a challenging US (and global) setting for price hikes.
- Polypropylene (PP): US spot PP prices reflect a sizable decline WoW, exceeding the European drop. US PP prices have benefited from tight polymer-grade propylene (PGP) – US spot PGP values reflect declines in early March.
- Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Global spot PVC markets remain generally weak, and we put forth our views, framing our more constructive view of US domestic demand and prices relative to export demand and prices this spring.
- Other Sector Developments: Global chemical feedstock market trends, with lower Brent crude oil prices and higher US natural gas prices, continue to suggest downward pressure on global polymer prices and US margins.
Exhibit 1 – Chart of the Day: US and Europe spot polymer prices trended lower relative to Asia WoW – no surprise.
