Trash, or Treasure: Waste Plastic Challenges and Opportunities

  • Most “advanced recycling” initiatives that are being widely discussed focus on plastic disposal versus plastic re-use and most are looking to downgrade the polymer to a feedstock or fuel, significantly limiting the “closed-loop” potential.
  • Disposing of the polymer likely suits the suppliers as it might keep the demand for virgin polymer higher.  A more likely outcome is consumer pressure to drive more mechanical recycling, or failing that, a move to renewable-based polymers.
  • Separately we look at the expanding importance of sustainability management across corporations and we discuss the API move to support carbon pricing.
